Percentages trip people up in the same place every time
The arithmetic is easy. The mistakes are not. what you treat as the 100It comes down to missing that this changes. If something listed at 50,000 sells for 35,000, you saved 15,000 — and the discount rate is 15,000 divided by the list price of 50,000, which is 30%. Divide by the sale price of 35,000 instead and you get 43% — which is not the discount rate.

Stacked discounts do not add up
A 20% coupon plus another 10% off is not 30% off. The discounts multiply, one after the other. On an item at 100,000: 20% off leaves 80,000, and taking a further 10% off that leaves 72,000. The real discount is not 30% but 28%. The more discounts you stack, the wider the gap gets.
It works the same way in reverse. Something that has fallen 50% needs to rise not 50% but 100%to get back to where it was. That is why treating a loss and the recovery from it as the same number goes so badly wrong with shares and crypto.
Adding 10% VAT and removing it are not the same sum
Adding VAT to a net price means multiplying by 1.1. Pulling the net price back out of a gross figure means dividing by 1.1. Take 10% off 110,000 and you get 99,000 — but the answer is 100,000. Put 110,000 and 100,000 into the discount-rate mode here and you get about 9.09% — that is VAT’s share of the gross price.
